Hyde Park business goes up in flames

HYDE PARK — Boston Fire worked into the morning to put out a large fire that started before 6 p.m. Saturday night at a warehouse on Grantley Street in Hyde Park.

Two firefighters were injured while fighting the flames but are expected to be okay, according to fire officials.

The warehouse, which houses Hyde Park Masonry and Landscape Supplies, has hazardous gases, said Boston Fire. The warehouse is about 100 feet long and 50 feet wide and Boston Fire said it's unknown what is burning, but it's likely business materials.

The fire hit five alarms and Commissioner Joe Finn was put in command of the fire, which went through the roof. The injures firefighters suffered were exhaustion and a muscular skeletal injury, officials said.

Firefighters have evacuated nearby homes because of the excessive smoke, which reportedly has a strong smell.

Another problem firefighters are dealing with is that massive amounts of water needed to put out the flames. A sizeable lake has pooled in the back of the building.

“Drain was clogged out back and it wasn’t draining correctly, so we had like a foot to two feet of water in the back of the building which made it a little dangerous and hazardous, and we couldn’t get trucks into the areas we needed them to," said Chief Finn.

The family owning that business declining to go on camera, saying it’s a hard loss for the family but they’re sure to get back on their feet.
