(MyFoxBoston.com) -- Newbury Police have confirmed that human remains were discovered on the Newbury side of Plum Island.

On Saturday, police received a report of a human bone on the beach in the area behind 28 Fordham Way. After a cycle of the tide, more remains were found, including some remains that were found further south on the island.

Bill Barrett told The Boston Globe his chocolate Labrador retriever puppy uncovered what appeared to be a human leg bone in the sand on the Newbury side of the beach, still covered with a sock.

Investigators from the Massachusetts State Police and members of the medical examiner's office were dispatched to the scene.

A coordinated search took place following the findings, covering a three mile area on the beach that dipped into the federal refuge portion of the island. More remains were found following the search.

Police plan to continue to monitor the tide in case any more remains wash ashore.
