'Goodbye': AOL announces AIM will log off for good

BOSTON — Internet service provider AOL announced Friday that it will shut down its messenger service AIM in December.

If you're a 90's kid, chances are you've spent hours trying to find that perfect screen name when the CD came in the mail. And what about that away message?

And don’t even get us started with organizing the buddy list.

“AIM tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed,” the company said in a statement. “As a result we’ve made the decision that we will be discontinuing AIM effective December 15, 2017.”

AIM was launched in 1997.

Now you may be going down memory lane remembering how we all needed to argue with our siblings (and sometimes parents) for that coveted computer time to dial up that internet (when it worked) in order to chat with friends outside of school.

Popular characters in pop culture used AIM to help navigate their relationships, too. Movies like “You’ve Got Mail” and TV shows like “Sex in the City” captivated us all.

“Thank you to all of our AIM users,” the company said. “Definitely stay tuned as we’re fired up to provide more products and experiences that people around the world love.”
