Franklin Park Zoo celebrates birth of lemurs just before Mother's Day

BOSTON — The Franklin Park Zoo is celebrating the birth of two ring-tailed Lemurs just before Mother's Day.

Nebbie (short for Nebuchadrezzer) gave birth on May 4 at the zoo. Officials say the mother and babies are doing well and are on display -- though the sexes of the babies are not yet known.

The births were part of the Ring-tailed Lemur Species Survival Plan, which is a run through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Zoo New England is a participant in that program.

"As with any new births, we are closely monitoring the mother and babies. The babies appear bright and alert, and are holding on tightly to their mother," said John Linehan, Zoo New England President and CEO. "We have an active group of lemurs and it will be great fun for guests to watch these twins grow up and observe the group dynamics."

Lemurs have been on exhibit at the zoo since the 1970s. They are noted for their wide, round eyes and white and black banded tails.
