Fireworks made legal last year played role in NH accident

PELHAM, N.H. (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A type of firework that was banned until last year because of safety issues played a role in the Pelham, N.H., accident that injured 13 people, including five children.

The deputy fire marshal told the Union Leader that re-loadable mortar fireworks were a factor, but wouldn't say how.

Fire officials say the re-loadable ones are especially dangerous because the user needs to stand over the firework to re-light it. The explosion went off on July 3 when somehow a supply of fireworks on a back deck exploded.

A 2-year-old grandchild of the homeowner remains in a medically induced coma. His condition continues to improve and is expected to make a full recovery.
