Driver in fatal 2017 Bourne Bridge crash expected to be sentenced

BOURNE, Mass. — The driver of the truck that killed a woman and left others seriously injured in a 2017 crash on the Bourne Bridge is due in court Monday.

Jose Portillo is charged with speeding and negligent operation of his box truck on July 2, 2017. Police say he slammed into the back of Deborah Carney's Honda, killing the 61-year-old. Two of her granddaughters and another relative were in the car. One of the girls now wears a helmet due to traumatic brain injuries she suffered.

Jose Portillo appeared in court on Sept. 12 to enter a guilty plea but because of an issue with some paperwork and his certified identity, the judge continued the case. The family of Deborah Carney was also there to make victim impact statements.

Portillo's attorney said last week that the plea agreement is for five years of probation and Portillo losing the use of his driver's license for 10 years. The agreement needs the judge's approval.
