Doug Flutie helps hand out $10K in new 'pay it forward' campaign

BOSTON — NFL legend and local hero Doug Flutie was in the Back Bay Thursday morning to help give away $10,000 as part of a new pay it forward campaign.

Flutie, along with a team of volunteers, handed out the cash as part of Eastern Bank’s Join Us For Good campaign.

But it wasn’t just about the money in the envelopes, it was the meaning behind it that Flutie hopes people will take away from the event.

“I think that the simple, every day gestures of doing something good for somebody else is important in life,” Flutie said. “It makes you feel better. When I got involved in charity work, it opened up a new world for me.”

Thursday’s event was about inspiring people to pay it forward by taking the cash and use it to help someone else.

It took about an hour and a half to hand out the money, but the bank is hoping the pay it forward spirit will continue.

For people who were not in the Back Bay area on Thursday, Eastern Bank is inviting New Englanders to get involved through its Selfies For Good sweepstakes. In a nod to the bank’s 200th anniversary, the bank will be giving out $200 to 500 randomly selected people who submit a selfie with the hashtag #JoinUsForGood on Twitter or Instagram.
