DNA on beer can helps in Worcester break-in case

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — Law enforcement authorities usually use DNA evidence to help solve serious crimes.

But DNA from an open beer can left behind during a Worcester house break last June has led to a suspect.

Police say 52-year-old Lawrence Leighton was arrested this week and charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony and larceny of more than $250 in connection with the summer break-in. A laptop, other electronics and cash were stolen.

Police Chief Gary Gemme says it took so long to make an arrest because the DNA testing in the case was low priority. The state police lab does DNA testing for more serious crimes, like murders and rapes, first.

He tells the Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/VkvdN0 ) other evidence, in addition to the DNA tests, pointed at Leighton.
