9-month-old boy found unresponsive helped by Roxbury day care staff

BOSTON — A child was found unresponsive after a medical incident Friday morning near an early childhood center in Roxbury, according to Children's Service of Roxbury.

The 9-month-old boy was found unresponsive shortly before 9:30 a.m. in a van at the CSR's early Childhood and Education Center.

"I saw a teacher running from the van with the little boy from the school and they were saying that he was unconscious," said Shani, a parent. "It was really scary, I am still a little bit nervous because he was in my daughter's class and I just want to make sure that he's ok."

Officials say the driver ran in to get a worker to take the child inside as 911 was called and employees began CPR.

Boston police say the incident is not considered suspicious.

The arriving paramedics took the child to Boston Medical Center. The child's condition was described as critical, but stable.

"At this time, our thoughts and primary concern is with the well-being of the child," spokesperson Sandra McCroom said in a letter. "The incident is currently under investigation, and we are gathering all the facts as quickly as we can."

CSR officials say the transportation van is not operated by the organization.

Parents were told they were allowed to pick up their children early if they wanted to.
