Care.com stands by product after repeat offender steals identity

BOSTON — A popular care-giving site based in Boston continues to face criticism for issues with its background checks.

Care.com has faced controversy across the country after a number of people were hired despite having criminal histories.

The most recent incident involves a woman from Georgia accused of identity theft.

Gina groves has a lot of mug shots, she's been in and out of metro Atlanta jails for years.

Parents who hired her to watch their children said they couldn’t believe someone with a criminal history made it through Care.com’s screening process.

“Reading her glowing reviews I figured she would be perfect,” one parent said.

The major problem is that Groves listed herself as Gina Christopher or sometimes Regina Christopher.

So the background checks the families paid for were useless.

They didn't realize something was wrong until they noticed fraudulent credit card charges.

Investigators say only fingerprints tell the whole story.

“If you're doing finger print checks with people, along with their identities, then you make see stuff like this,” an officer said,

Groves’ sentencing paperwork shows that she pleaded guilty to six felony counts of identity fraud.

A judge sentenced her to 25 years and mandated that she say pay $1,200 in restitution.

Care.com told FOX25 that unfortunately, Groves is a career criminal. They also said they stand by their background check process but have refused repeated requests to sit down for an interview.
