Brockton church holding multiple Sunday services while reopening amid coronavirus

BROCKTON, Mass. — For the first Sunday during Phase 1 of the state’s reopening plan, some people will be heading back to church. At Brockton Assembly of God, two Sunday services will be held to continue social distancing while reopening.

Roughly 100 people are expected at each 50-minute service, set for 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Lead Pastor Dr. R. Steve Warner said they have pews blocked off for social distancing and that the church will be sanitized between services.

Massachusetts guidelines require families be seated 6 feet apart and that churches only operate at 40% capacity.

“No one is going to be made a hero for coming and no one is going to be dismissed because they don’t,” Warner said.

Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan said, “You go to church, you want to physically go there, you really have to taken every precaution.”

Brockton has been hit hard during the coronavirus pandemic, with more than 230 deaths citywide.
