Boston-bound Amtrak train delayed for multiple hours in Connecticut

On the busiest travel day of the year, an Amtrak train bound for Boston stalled in Connecticut for more than three hours. Passengers told Boston 25 News that they were stuck on a train with no power as they tried to get home for the holiday.

That train was originally supposed to arrive at South Station at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, but those folks weren't there until 8 p.m.

One passenger spoke with Boston 25 News over the phone, saying he boarded the Amtrak train in Washington D.C. just after 8 a.m. Wednesday morning. He said the train originated out of Richmond, Va. and then would be making stops along the way in D.C., Philadelphia, New York, New Haven and a final destination in Boston.

About several hours into the trip, the train came to a stop in Stamford, Conn., the man said, adding that crews told passengers it was an engine issue.

Then things got worse.

According to that passenger, a Metro North train had to pull the train closer to Stamford, giving passengers hope that the fix was made. However, that hope quickly faded as the train stalled again.

While crews were doing repairs, passengers sat on a dark train with no power for almost two hours.

"It was horrendous, the conditions were terrible," said Dante Gonzalez, a passenger. "It was hot, people with babies were crying, it wasn't what you expect when you ride the train. You expect comfort."

That passenger added that it was a sold out train with the majority of the passengers were bound for Boston.

Passengers have been posting on social media asking for a refund, but Amtrak telling those customers they must report the issue after the trip has been completed.
