Suspect in Worcester firefighter's death pleads not guilty to homicide

WORCESTER, Mass. — A West Boylston man pled not guilty to multiple charges, including second-degree murder, in connection to the death of a Worcester firefighter.

The charges were initially announced in a Friday afternoon press conference held by the Worcester District Attorney, along with the city's police and fire departments.

Momoh Kamara, 21, of West Boylston, was charged with second-degree murder, arson, and burglary stemming from a fire that killed Worcester firefighter Christopher Roy.

Roy died while battling flames at an apartment building in Lowell Street Dec. 9, 2018.

During the long attempt to put out the flames, Roy was trapped inside the building with four other firefighters after the situation deteriorated rapidly.

All five of the firefighters escaped the blaze through ladders, with Roy and one other being transported to the hospital. Roy later succumbed to his injuries. The other firefighter is in stable condition, according to Worcester FD.

Worcester DA Joseph Early announced the charges against Kamara at Friday's press conference. The suspect was a former resident of the building he's accused of burning, police say. Kamara allegedly set the fire in the building's basement.

During Kamara's arraignment Friday afternoon, he pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail.
