3 dead: Listeria outbreak linked to Dole packaged salads is over, officials say

Federal officials announced Monday that the listeria outbreak traced to Dole packaged salads has ended.

In its updated Food Safety Alert, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided a final tally of cases before declaring the investigation closed. The CDC said the outbreak was responsible for 18 illnesses and 16 hospitalizations across 13 states. Three people died, the CDC reported.

Cases involving hospitalized patients associated with this recall were found in Iowa, Idaho, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin, Food Safety News reported.

The CDC offers tips on how to properly wash salad greens to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses.

Product recalls for this particular outbreak began in October, Food Safety News reported. A subsequent investigation by Dole detected listeria on equipment at multiple company facilities, Food Safety News reported.
