MBTA Commuter Rail delays fare gates until 2021

BOSTON — The MBTA is delaying its plan to install new fare gates along the Commuter Rail.

The gates. which would be similar to those used in the subway system, were supposed to be put up at North, South, and Back Bay Stations.

They would require riders to prove they paid for a ticket before boarding trains.

The MBTA now says they are waiting until 2021, when they switch the T to an all-electronic payment system.

They say it makes more sense to install all their new gates at the same time.
