Massive ground beef recall affects Massachusetts restaurants

WASHINGTON (MyFoxBoston.com) — Close to two million pounds of ground beef that may contain E. coli are being recalled in four states including Massachusetts, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Inspection Service announced Monday.

Wolverine Packing Company, a Detroit establishment, is recalling approximately 1.8 million pounds of ground beef products after the USDA  linked the company's product to multiple reports of E. coli illnesses. The recall will affect restaurants in Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified the Inspection Service of 11 E. coli cases in four states from late April to early May. The USDA determined that these cases were connected to Wolverine Packing Company's ground beef products.

The government agency has not released a list of which restaurants may have received the contaminated beef, but stated in a press release that it continues to investigate the matter with Massachusetts and federal public health partners.
