As Worcester digs out, city prepares for more storms

WORECESTER, Mass — In The City of Worcester, there is no question, winter is back.

You can feel its icy presence just walking down the street, or skating in the City Hall Rink.

And you can see it piled high on street corners.

Cars here are still encrusted in snow and ice

And people here are still trying to get rid of it, any way they can.

Mark Delia spent his lunchtime, outside, risking frostbite, clearing steps and a walkway.

It’s not easy.

“The windchill is pretty cold, just being out here for long periods of time, it becomes difficult to work. With your hands getting cold,” said Delia.

Even though bagged mulch is stacked high at Rocky’s Ace Hardware, Winter is still King

And with more winter weather on the way, the tools to deal with snow and ice are scarce.

“You got the last bag of Pet-Friendly Ice Melt,” I said to Ken Renzi of Worcester.

“Thank goodness. I’ve been to several different stores, nobody has it. Everyone is out,” Renzi said.

“I’m glad I came very early because they are running out of it very quickly, used a big bag this morning. It was a messy day yesterday icy day, getting ready for Tuesday,” said John Longhi of Worcester.

Our forecasters predict more storms, more snow, more ice, more winter misery is just around the corner.

And in a winter that’s been very mild, that’s not welcome news.

That’s why Harley Schellhorn, in her shorts and flip flops, and SpongeBob SquarePants jacket, is looking well past the month of March.

“I was looking at the weather and I was like, oh my gosh, three days next week of snow. I want the heat. I want to go to the beach, not this crappy weather,” Schellhorn said.
