Timing out the nor’easter: Here’s what to expect Tuesday as snowfall continues

BOSTON — A long-duration nor’easter arrived in Massachusetts Monday and intensified overnight, bringing heavy snow, soaking rain, and whipping wind.

Heavy, wet snow is piling up in Western and Central Massachusetts, while Eastern Massachusetts was getting drenched with rain early Tuesday. Points along the coast were getting battered with howling wind gusts.

Boston 25 News Meteorologist Jason Brewer reports that towns like Scituate will not see relief from wind gusts of 60 miles per hour until roughly midnight.

Scituate Coastal Concerns

Hazardous travel conditions are expected during the Tuesday morning and evening commute.

The storm isn’t expected to wrap up until about sunrise on Wednesday.

For those living in Central Massachusetts, snow began to work in across the higher elevations Monday night. Snow is expected to pile up throughout the day Tuesday.

A winter storm warning is in effect with up to 18 inches of snow on tap for parts of Central Massachusetts in the Fitchburg area, as well as up near the New Hampshire border.

Fitchburg snow conditions

The Metro West saw rain Monday night and things turn windy by Tuesday morning. The rain will give way to snow by Tuesday afternoon.

Up to 8 inches of snow is on tap for towns and cities in this part of the state.

Framingham storm conditions

The North Shore saw rain at the start of the storm on Monday night. By Tuesday morning, the winds started to whip. Total snowfall will take over by Tuesday afternoon.

Communities on the North Shore could see anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of snow.

A high wind warning has also been issued for Eastern Essex County with gusts up to 65 mph expected.

Gloucester storm conditions

Communities on the South Shore saw rain overnight before things turned windy Tuesday morning. Snow will begin to mix in with the rain by Tuesday afternoon.

Eastern Essex, Eastern Norfolk, Northern Bristol, and Western Plymouth counties are under a winter storm watch. Two to 6 inches of snow is expected in those areas.

Boston will likely see about 6 inches of snow, while parts of Western Massachusetts could get buried by a foot-and-a-half of fresh powder before things are all said and done.

Cape Cod and the Islands are in for a coating to 2 inches of snow.
