‘Stay safe, stay home’: Treacherous travel on Massachusetts highways, roads as snow piles up

FITCHBURG, Mass. — The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is urging Bay Staters to stay off highways and roads Tuesday as snow continues to pile up across the state.

In the Fitchburg area, a car got stuck in the right travel lane of snow-covered Route 2.

In the nearby town of Harvard, emergency officials warned of rapidly deteriorating roads after a white sedan rolled over in the area of Ayer and Depot roads. The car just missed striking a home. One person was hospitalized.

In Wilbraham, downed trees and power lines were causing headaches for emergency crews, as well as cars skidding off snowy roads.

“It’s winter in New England! Please use caution and stay off the roads, if possible,” the police department said.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has implemented a 40-mph speed restriction on the Massachusetts Turnpike from the New York border to Millbury.

MassDOT also said that it has deployed more than 900 pieces of equipment for snow and ice response.

MEMA also warned of snowy driving conditions, as well as flooded roadways along the coast.

“Stay safe during the storm and check road conditions if you must leave home,” MEMA said. “Clear snow and ice from your vehicle.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
