Gov. Healey is optimistic about Brockton Hospital reopening after fire forced it to close weeks ago

BROCKTON, Mass. — Governor Maura Healey says work is being done to try to get Brockton Hospital back open after a fire forced it to close about three weeks ago.

“This hospital will reopen, it must reopen, we hope to have it reopened starting in about three months,” said Gov. Maura Healey. “It’s certainly making sure we have people available to do the work as well as the resources to be able to do it, that also includes the physical plan, making sure this gets built out, working through licensing and permitting getting things online.”

While the hospital remains closed, other healthcare facilities in Brockton are feeling the extra burden.

“It’s been a tremendous challenge,” said Maria Celli, Deputy CEO of Brockton Neighborhood Health Center.

Celli says Good Samaritan Medical Center nearby has been crippled with the increase in patients after losing the emergency department at Brockton Hospital, so a lot of them will head to the health center instead.

“Those patients will go wait for some time and then come here, where we’ll do everything we can to triage and assist but in some cases, they still have to go to the emergency room,” said Celli.

While this health center is trying to fill the gaps, it’s also opening a new pharmacy to decrease wait times for patients in this area.

“Honestly it’s essential for us to be able to have a pharmacy of this size and magnitude to serve the 37,000 or so patients that we serve on a yearly basis,” said Celli.

Even with new programs in the works, healthcare workers are still hopeful Brockton Hospital will reopen soon.

“Right now, it’s out of commission for a little bit, others have stepped in, and our job is to work to make sure this gets back online as quickly as possible and the state will be there to support,” said Gov. Healey.
