Clinging to mom: Stone Zoo welcomes baby two-toed sloth

Stoneham — Stoneham’s Stone Zoo recently welcomed a new resident.

Last Friday, a baby Linne’s two-toed sloth was born to parents Lunesta and Nero. It’s the pair’s sixth offspring.

“Lunesta is an experienced mom and knows how to care for her growing family,” said Pete Costello, Assistant Curator at Stone Zoo. “We’re excited for guests to watch the baby grow and settle into the habitat. In the meantime, it will stay pretty closely attached to mom for a while.”

The tiny tree-dweller will be entirely dependent on its mother for the first few months of its life.

Linne’s two-toed sloths are native to the rainforests of South America.

“Sloths move through the canopy at a rate of about 40 yards per day, munching on leaves, twigs and buds. Sloths have an exceptionally low metabolic rate and spend 15 to 20 hours per day sleeping,” according to the World Wildlife Fund.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
