Holyoke medical examiner loses camera used to register autopsies

HOLYOKE, Mass. — The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Holyoke has reported that a digital camera used to register autopsies performed between July 31, 2015 and November 24, 2017 has gone missing.

The camera was used by a medical examiner for later reference in his investigations and contained sensitive and important material.

The office has notified the next of kin of over 800 decedents who were examined within that time frame who may have been affected by this situation.

OCME staff was notified last week that the memory card containing the autopsy pictures was inside the camera that went missing. The camera used to register autopsies is separate from cameras used in crime scene investigation.

The medical examiner responsible for the photographic records that are now missing has been suspended on paid leave pending the investigation into the incident.
