Heavy fire at Revere home displaces 19 people, including children

REVERE, Mass. — A heavy fire that broke out at a Revere home on Wednesday morning has displaced 19 people, some of them children.

The blaze broke out overnight Tuesday into Wednesday in the area of 21-23 Thorton Street, officials say.

According to Revere Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Giampietro, the fire was already strong when crews arrived at the scene, making it a difficult fight as it was so involved when they got there.

Flames could be seen pouring out of the third floors after the first crews arrived. A fourth alarm was struck for this fire.

The home is a duplex, with several units on each side. Residents were able to escape the fire on their own, but now that building is a total loss.

"I was just able to grab my daughter and run out the door," said Norma Mendoza, who narrowly escaped the blaze. "I couldn't see anything, as soon as I opened my door, the house was full of smoke."

Officials say the fire started in the basement, but the cause is still under investigation.

"It was a lot, a lot of fire coming out of the building, it looked like it took the entire building," said Manny Galvez, who lives across the street from the building. "It was pretty crazy."

No injuries were reported.
