Framingham State students protest continuous racist incidents at school

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — A crowd of students walked out of classes and marched around the Framingham State University campus Tuesday in response to an ongoing issue with racist incidents on the campus.

The third incident in just the past two months was reported Monday when an African-American student found a racially offensive flier slid under her door. It comes less than two weeks after racial slurs were found written on a dorm room door.

The students organized the march in response to the incidents, calling for more diversity and inclusion classes, implicit bias training for campus police and a policy update on hate speech in the school’s handbook.

"I don't feel safe," one student told Boston 25 News Tuesday.

The school has even added a page to its website to track racist incidents on campus: Racism response: timeline and updates.

Students began the protest outside on the campus, but eventually moved into the McCarthy Center to approach the door of the campus police department.

Two female students found facial slurs written on the door of their dorm room on October 13. Maintenance worked quickly to scrub the message away. But the girls reported the same slur on their dorm door 3 days later.

On Oct. 16, police were working with FSU officials to look for a possible connection with the first two incidents.
