Family says goodbye to father who died in garage collapse

Boston — Family, friends, and union workers stood in long lines trying to console each other Sunday at the Russell funeral home in Brockton as they said goodbye to Peter Monsini, 51, of Easton.

“I don’t want anyone to go through what my family is going through,” said his cousin Katrina Monsini. “I just want him to be remembered as the guy who was going to protect all of his younger girl cousins at all cost. It was kind of funny, yelling at all my little boyfriends when I was 13. He loved his family. He was an amazing father to his son and I just want people to remember him for the love he showed all of us.”

The cousin, son, brother, father, uncle, and friend died last week while working on the government center demolition project.

“It’s a horrible, horrible thing that happened,” said family friend Taylor Gilmore. “It’s awful.”

Police say he was working on a machine at the top of the garage when the floor collapsed and he fell nine stories.

“My mother called me before the name had been released or anything,” said Monsini. “She called me and told me. Honestly, it’s still very surreal. It is still surreal. It is hard to grasp. The reality that he’s actually gone. We’re trying to all rally together as a family because that’s what us Monsini’s do.”

While most of the roads are back open around the government center garage, the same can’t be said for the trains. You can still see the tape at North Station, because of the accident there is still no Green Line service between North Station and Government Center. Even though Orange Line service has resumed. Trains will not stop at Haymarket until further notice.

Since there are still fears of the garage collapsing further, MBTA officials say they want a team of structural engineers to examine the entire area—above and underground.
