Family of marathon victim thanks first responders

BOSTON (AP) - The family of a man who lost a leg in the Boston Marathon bombing is expressing their gratitude to the first responders and bystanders who risked their lives to save him.

Marc Fucarile's family gave a statement Monday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where Fucarile is in intensive care.

Besides losing his right leg above the knee, the 34-year-old Stoneham man suffered serious burns and has extensive shrapnel wounds, including in his heart.

Fucarile has a 5-year-old son with his fiance, Jen Regan, who read the statement Monday.

Regan said the first thing Fucarile said when he woke up after the bombing was that he loved her and his son and was sorry he was at the marathon.

Regan said the family's entire focus is on his care and recovery and asked for privacy.
