WASHINGTON — The White House said Friday that President Biden had a lesion removed from his chest that was found to be cancerous.
The cancerous lesion, determined to be a basal cell carcinoma, was removed, and no further treatment will be required, The Associated Press reported.
Kevin O’Connor, the president’s physician, said in a letter to the White House that “all cancerous tissue was successfully removed.” The area around the biopsy site was also presumptively treated.
Basal cell carcinoma is one of the two most common types of skin cancer, the other being squamous cell carcinoma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Both are considered treatable.
In his letter, O’Connor said that basal cell lesions do not tend to “spread,” unlike squamous cell lesions or melanomas. O’Conner said that the site of the biopsy has “healed nicely,” and that he would continue to monitor Biden as part of his “ongoing comprehensive healthcare.”
