Medford police officer accused of lying in July murder probe arraigned

WOBURN, Mass (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Medford police officer was arraigned Tuesday amid accusations that he lied to investigators probing a July 3 murder that reportedly took place in his home.

Miguel Lopez, 53, of Stoneham, was arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court on two counts of witness intimidation. He was released on personal recognizance.

Lopez is accused of removing evidence from his residence at 6 Micah's Pond Way in Stoneham in an attempt to cover up a reported drug deal that investigators claim led up to a double shooting.

Investigators allege Lopez's 28-year-old stepson had arranged to sell drugs to 24-year-old Jessie Williams, of Medford, and 19-year-old Eugene Tate, of Malden, at the home through "known associates." They claim the men drew handguns, demanding cash and money after entering. Both the 28-year-old and his friend, Joseph Puopolo, were shot. Puopolo, 27, died as a result of his injuries. The 28-year-old man survived a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Officials say Puopolo was not involved in the drug transaction and just happened to be at his friend's home on the night of the shooting. Loved ones say Puopolo was a veteran of the U.S. Army and spent 14 months fighting in Afghanistan.

Williams and Tate are charged with murder, armed assault with intent to murder, armed assault in a dwelling, assault with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery, and illegal possession of a firearm.
