Warm winter weather helps some businesses

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The businesses that rely on warm weather sometimes can’t open that quickly when we have these warm stretches. But there are some places that have found themselves benefiting in what typically is their off-season.

There was absolutely no sign of winter along Mass Ave in Cambridge as bicyclists and scooters made their way down the bike path.

Inside Cambridge Bicycle, the repair requests resemble May’s workflow.

Alexander Hayes and Joshua Barrows-Smith say it is been unusual. “People are still commuting so there are still flat times, basic stuff that you would expect to see in the Spring or Summer, Fall,” said Hayes.

“Getting people if their bike stop works or they get a flat or it breaks down. Just getting them back on the road,” said Barrows-Smith. “The real hardship is the cold weather so when you get rid of that you might as well ride,” said Hayes.

Down the street outside MIT, food truck workers say the math is simple.

“Good weather means more business. People are more out and open to it,” a worker said.

Tyler Jon Morrison is the owner at Jaxon Golf Shop on Pearl Street in Somerville says this weather is a stroke of good luck.

“There has been an uptick in the number of people just walking in,” said Morrison.

He says the nice weather timed out perfectly for his first-year business. “They are feeling it, people are starting to feel that fever. It’s like a switch when that first bit of warm air hits them”, said Morrison.

It’s was so warm out, Unicorn Golf Course in Stoneham managed to open and they were packed. “Here we are playing golf,” said one golfer. “It’s like a Summer day.”
