‘They’re going to be in pain for a long time’: Two women struck by car in Burlington

BURLINGTON, Mass. — Two women are in stable but critical condition after being struck by a car at full speed.

It happened around 11:53 a.m. on Sunday at Francis Wyman Road and Cedar Street in Burlington.

Witnesses said the women were in a crosswalk when they were hit and sent airborne.

The mother of one of them told Boston 25 News that her daughter was knocked unconscious by the impact and is now intubated.

She said her daughter suffered a brain bleed and has broken bones all over her body.

“They’re both two beautiful girls, and I don’t know if they’re ever going to be the same. They’re going to be in pain for a long, long time,” said Mary Gildea.

Mary Gildea said her 33-year-old daughter Maura and her daughter’s future sister-in-law were on a walk when their lives flashed before their eyes.

“They’re a mess. They have contusions everywhere. It’s horrendous.”

Police said the driver who hit them stopped and is cooperating.

“She wasn’t drinking or anything like that. She was actually coming from Trader Joe’s shopping,” said neighbor Kevin Lewis.

Lewis rushed outside after hearing the commotion.

He was shaken up by what he saw and said the driver involved was traumatized.

“She was really upset,” recalled Lewis. “She said she drives up and down here all the time on her way to work.”

Neighbors said the crosswalk where the women were struck has been a dangerous spot for pedestrians for years.

A blinking yellow light changes to red after a walk button is pushed.

However, people who live in the area said many drivers don’t stop.

“I think people expect when they have the walking sign that they’re clear to go,” said neighbor Kate Asher. “Even myself, I avoid it because people drive so quickly.”

Police haven’t if the driver involved will face any charges or citations.
