Woman’s car struck by flying ice along 495

CONCORD, Mass. — As another storm moves in, State Police are urging people to make sure they clear their cars. Troopers had gotten multiple calls for ice flying off cars after last week’s weather. Laurie Langelo’s 2010 Subaru Forester is a mess. “It came and hit right there on the driver’s side,” said Langelo. “The little slivers went flying everywhere.”

Laurie believes this chunk of ice was part of a much bigger piece that came flying off an SUV. “Within a second it was oh boy that’s coming right toward me,” said Langelo. She was driving south on 495 near Berlin when her car was hit – making it impossible to see the road. “The big sheet of ice was humungous and it stayed as one unit as it came off,” said Langelo. “I couldn’t see out of the windshield.”

She’s thankful she had on her sunglasses and hat on. “There was glass everywhere, there was glass on my neck. Little slivers of glass and it was in my hat,” said Langelo. “A few minutes afterwards I thought I swallowed some glass.”

Laurie was checked out at a hospital and just had some cuts on her hands. Because the other car never stopped – Laurie has to pay her insurance deductible to get the repairs covered. She’s hoping anyone who sees the extent of the damage would think twice about driving before clearing all of the snow and ice. “I could have been killed, crashed into someone. Someone could have crashed into me. I could have crashed into a guardrail because you can’t see,” said Langelo. “Take the extra time and do it because you could really injure something”

State police can give you a ticket. Here in Massachusetts it is a $40 fine for having an obstructed view. It’s a $200 fine for having an unsecured load like snow or ice on your roof.
