Man held on $200K bail after girlfriend's death following physical altercation

DUDLEY, Mass. — A Massachusetts man faces assault charges in connection with the death of his girlfriend.

Investigators are stopping short calling this murder, but investigators are still working to gather evidence and put together the timeline as to what led to the death of Brenda Hatheway.

Her boyfriend, Joseph Kenadek, was arrested at the scene. He has since been charged with aggravated assault and battery, as well as domestic assault and battery.

Neighbors said the two fought all the time and weren’t surprised when they heard screaming Sunday morning.

Hatheway was found unconscious in the street. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause and manner of death.

“I’ve seen them hit each other a couple of times, but I never got involved because it was nothing major,” neighbor Melissa Evans said.

Hatheway is no stranger to the media.

It was more than two years ago when she spoke with Boston 25 about her daughter’s disappearance and the violent relationship her daughter was in.

To this day, her daughter’s body was never found.

Kenadek was arraigned Monday in Dudley District Court on charges of aggravated assault and battery and domestic assault and battery. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. He was ordered held on $200,000 cash bail.
