BOSTON — A man accused of killing one person and seriously injuring another in two unprovoked attacks near Boston Common has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Ashlie Jeremy, 27, of Bedford, appeared in court Thursday, where not-guilty pleas were entered on his behalf at his arraignment. He is charged with murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and larceny.
Prosecutors allege Jeremy fatally attacked a man outside the Boylston MBTA station Wednesday morning. Authorities say just hours later, he allegedly assaulted a 21-year-old man near Chinatown using a piece of a steel jackhammer.
According to prosecutors, Jeremy has previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
The case has raised additional questions after The Boston Globe reported that Jeremy had been released from federal custody about two weeks before the attacks. He had previously been charged with attempting to smuggle a firearm into Roxbury District Court.
Jeremy is expected to return to court following the completion of his mental health evaluation.
