Burning boat brought to shore in Harwich

HARWICH, Mass. — A boat was safely brought back to a Harwich harbor Friday, slightly charred and crispy after the vessel caught fire on the high seas.

Firefighters responded to the Saquatucket Harbor around 12:15 p.m. for a report of a boat on fire being towed in, the Harwich Fire Department said. A harbormaster craft and a TowBost US boat helped firefighters to extinguish the smoke rising from the vessel before escorting it back to shore.

“Initial suppression efforts by the Harbormaster and TowBoatUS contained the fire and then firefighters were able to gain access to the boat and finish extinguishment,” the department wrote on Facebook. “Another great example of the interagency cooperation the exists here on Cape Cod. Public and private partners pulling together to get the mission accomplished.”

Video from Diane Thomas captured a large plume of black smoke rising from the boat as it was brought back to land.

The Fire Department did not say whether anyone was injured in the incident.

The United States Coast Guard Station in Chatham also assisted in the effort.
