Ipswich Fire Chief held without bail after abuse allegations

DRACUT, Mass. — The Ipswich Fire Chief is now off the job and behind bars facing serious allegations of domestic abuse.

Gregory Gagnon, 41, was arrested early Saturday morning in connection with an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney and Dracut Police into allegations of assault of a female victim who is known to him.

The DA says Gagnon was first arrested after a report of an assault on a woman at his home in Dracut on Thursday. He was off duty at the time.

At his arraignment on Friday, in the Lowell District Court, Gagnon was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, witness intimidation and two counts of assault and battery on a household or family member.

After his arraignment, he was released on his own recognizance - until investigators learned of another incident involving Gagnon and the same woman, which lead to him being arrested again.

Gagnon is accused of attempting to strangle the woman about a year ago. This time, he was held without bail until he awaits his next arraignment.

As the investigation continues, Ipswich Town Manager Robin Crosbie told Boston 25 News reporter Elysia Rodriguez that Gagnon will be on paid leave.

Gagnon is currently paid 127K a year and has been on the job since 2014.

For the time being, a Lieutenant within the department will serve as acting chief.
