Driver pulled from SUV after it careens into Boston's Muddy River

BOSTON — A male driver was pulled out of an SUV after it careened into the Muddy River in Boston's Back Bay.

First responders donned wet suits to rescue the man, who was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not immediately known. Witnesses said no passengers were inside the SUV.

Kathleen White just missed the crash, and had walked by the crash scene minutes earlier.

"I was probably down there about 5,6 minutes, and by the time I turned around, I saw all the fire trucks coming, and then when I got a closer look from the bridge, it was clear that someone was, someone’s car was in the water," she said.

Witness Dianne Sloan was at Charlesgate West and Beacon streets when the crash happened.

"It's like he was gunning it," Sloan said of the driver.

Sloan saw the Honda CRV accelerate and head straight into the shallow river, which runs into the Charles River.

"He came from this direction right there, and it was fast, and he just jumped the curb. And then just kept going straight down here and then just started rolling right into the river," Sloan said.

Divers, firefighters and police surrounded the area. Boston Police told Boston 25 News that an officer jumped in and pulled the driver out before he was taken away in an ambulance, seemingly OK.

By 8 p.m., the car was successfully secured, lifted from the river, and with water gushing from the doors, placed on the bank before being towed away.

It's still unclear what caused the driver to end up here.

The crash remains under investigation.
