Community mourns loss of cyclist hit and killed in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A community is mourning the loss of a young woman who was hit and killed by a car in Cambridge.

Amanda Phillips was riding her bike along Cambridge Street Thursday when someone inside a parked car opened the car door, forcing Phillips into traffic, where she collided with a truck.

Tonight, people who knew Phillips have come together to honor the woman.

A bicycle has been painted white in her memory and people left flowers at the scene of the crash. One witness at the scene described hearing her screams and witnessing the aftermath to FOX25.

“I just heard this scream like someone had been hurt,” witness Lumina Garfield-Cordova said. "I just kept asking people to turn around and leave the intersection so the emergency vehicles could come. When everyone had arrived and was taking care of her, I just walked home and cried."

Phillips worked at Diesel Café in Somerville and was set to graduate from nursing school. The coffee shop where she worked is closing early Friday.

When FOX25 stopped by on Friday, a sign was posted on the business’ door notifying the public of the loss of their friend.

"I understand that the person who opened the car door never intended to harm her, but these are preventable incidents. People need to be more careful for each other," Garfield-Cordova said.

No charges have been filed against the driver.
