MALDEN — A crime spree from Wakefield to Malden is still under investigation as police continued to look for another 20-year-old suspect on the run Wednesday night.

Police say at least two young men stole a car and possibly other items before crashing it and running away from officers.

Police were able to catch at least one of the suspects.

Neighbors along Newman Road in Malden say they were in shock and awe as officers swarmed their neighborhood Wednesday searching for the young men who stole a car.

“It was just a crash and I looked up and saw my fence was down, so I said what’s going on here, the next thing I know, a minute later, police officers are running by my window,” said Ralph Sully.

K-9s were in and out checking every car and every yard, neighbors said.

Police believe the teens started their crime spree in Wakefield, where they stole the SUV before escaping to Malden.

Officers say they tried to approach the driver, once they knew the car was stolen, but the suspects took off, eventually turning into a dead-end parking lot.

Ryan Newhall says he heard the bang as the car slammed into a fence, then he saw the two young men run away from police.

“I yelled at one of the detectives that he ran that way, and I think that’s when he got one of them down to the ground,” Newhall said.

Malden Police say they arrested an 18-year-old, but they’re still looking for the other suspect after chasing them down through a cemetery nearby.

“They were weaving and running through the graves, surprised they didn’t hit any of them because that’s a pretty long cemetery, I give credit to police for who they did catch because they were running hard,” Newhall said.

Now, neighbors are hopeful police will catch that other suspect who's still on the run.

But in the meantime, they plan to be extra cautious.

“I’m still a little shaken up just seeing it, still a little shaken up just seeing it, but I’ll be on alert tonight just in case,” Newhall said.
