Nor’easter, high tide cause flooding and rough conditions along coast

PLUM ISLAND, Mass. — The Nor’easter’s strong winds combining with high tide made for some rough conditions along the coast, leaving some homes surrounded by floodwater Tuesday.

“This is the worst it’s ever been,” said Stan Sacks, who lives on Plum Island. “The whole property is gone at this point, the fence has been torn down, there’s about 3-4 inches of water, sand and mud in the entire basement or first level of the house.”

Homeowners like Stan Sacks were left surveying the damage Tuesday after the Nor’easter.

The force of the waves stripped the siding off Sacks’ home on Plum Island while burying doorways in sand.

From the north shore to the south shore, coastal flooding was a problem all day.

Tidal waves shut down Winthrop Parkway in Revere for hours, leaving nearby streets impassable with floodwaters.

“Mother nature’s kind of nasty today, as usual with a northeast storm,” said Robert Santos, who lives in Revere. “It’s beautiful, it’s nice as long as nobody gets hurt, no property damage, it’s beautiful to see.”

But for Sacks, there was damage to his home and a few nearby.

He says the last couple of storms destroyed the sandbags and stones that are supposed to protect their properties.

“Unless there is a hard barrier, there’s not a solution that’s going to work here and all these houses and city sewer infrastructure will be lost, which I’m told will affect probably 35 houses in this area total once that goes,” said Sacks.

He’s hoping a hard sea wall will be built there to protect them from future storms, but for now he’s just worried about Wednesday.

“The next high tide is going to get even worse,” said Sacks.

Some homeowners along the coast worry there’s still that storm surge that could cause more flooding with the next high tide Wednesday morning.
