HAVERHILL, Mass. — A Haverhill man was killed after being hit by a car Friday morning.

The incident happened at around 5:30 a.m. on Friday at a four-way intersection known as "White's Corner," near Main, Water and Merrimack streets. The Essex District Attorney's Office said that the pedestrian, a male victim, was pronounced dead at the scene and the Massachusetts State Police is assisting in the investigation.

The victim has been identified as 59-year-old Charles Burrell of Haverhill, also known as Chuckie.

Burrell's family told Boston 25 News he was walking to the bus stop to catch a ride to his job at Anna Jaques Hospital when he was struck.

"It's my wife's only brother, living relative, everyone else has passed. She's all alone now," said Chuckie's brother-in-law Joseph Mack.

Anna Jaques release a statement to Boston 25 News:

"Our hospital community today is devastated to learn of the passing of Chuck Burril who was a Housekeeper at Anna Jaques for the past 18 years. Chuck was a well-known and deeply valued member of our staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chuck's family - and his housekeeping family - during this very sad time."

Police confirmed they were looking for a silver Chrysler PT Cruiser, which is believed to have struck the pedestrian. Friday afternoon tracked down the PT cruiser, thanks to a witness who saw the car with damage driving in the area.

"I noticed the front windshield was cracked and there was a dent in the front bumper so I called Haverhill Police and gave them the plate number, they said he was local," the witness told Boston 25 News.

Police went to the home where the vehicle was parked. A person was seen leaving with police, but it's unclear if police interviewed him or filed any charges.
