AMHERST — Let's try this again.
A week after it seemed the UMass Basketball team would be led by Pat Kelsey, but Kelsey pulled out of his commitment less minutes away from his former introduction on campus.
Now, the reins have been turned over to Matt McCall, a 35-year-old graduate of the University of Florida, where he worked for successful coach Billy Donovan in Gainesville.
McCall most recently was the head coach at Chattanooga, where he led the Mocs to the Southern Conference championship and NCAA Tournament this year. McCall posted a record of 48-18 over two seasons.
"It is my pleasure to welcome Matt McCall and his family to the University of Massachusetts," said UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford in a news release. "Matt is a rising star in college basketball coaching who has been a key piece of three successful programs in his career. He has earned a reputation as a relentless worker, a great teammate and colleague and a confident leader of young men. Matt has worked with some of the most respected coaches and administrators in the country, who loudly sing his praises. Coach McCall's appointment begins an exciting new chapter for our tradition-rich men's basketball program at UMass."
