LOS ANGELES — The Red Sox placed catcher Ryan Hanigan on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Friday.
Hanigan was was diagnosed with peroneal tendinitis after being hit by a pitch on his left ankle while catching Thursday night against Seattle.
The move comes less than 24 hours after the Sox claimed journeyman catcher Bryan Holaday off waivers from the Texas Rangers. Holaday will back up Sandy Leon as Leon assumes the starting role.
