The Boston Red Sox have had a packed two days since returning home from an eight-game road trip. They retired David Ortiz's number 34, put up nine runs against an Angels club floating around .500, and made an abundance of roster moves to the 40-man club.
A day after claiming right-handed pitcher Doug Fister from the Angels and signing former Cardinals infielder Johnny Peralta to a minor-league contract, the Red Sox moved utility-man Josh Rutledge to the 7-Day Disabled List for a concussion. Manager John Farrell stated that Rutledge has been battling a head injury since Memorial Day, when the infielder attempted a diving catch in shallow centerfield against the Chicago White Sox.
With Rutledge moving to the DL, infielder Tzu-Wei Lin was brought up from Double-A Portland as a replacement. Deven Marrero will man third base tonight while Dustin Pedroia is set to play his second consecutive game at second base after returning from a back injury.
The Red Sox have also transferred the ailing Brock Holt to the 60-Day DL as a procedural move. Holt was originally placed on the 10-Day DL for vertigo back on April 21.
In advance of Sunday's start against the Angels, Boston also activated Fister while optioning right-hander Hector Velazquez to Triple-A Pawtucket in the process.
