BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Red Sox Manager John Farrell announced that he has lymphoma Friday.
The 53-year-old says he will be stepping away from the team, but that the cancer is treatable. He says it was discovered during a recent surgery.
The Red Sox tweeted Friday afternoon, quoting Farrell, who said it's localized and he's happy to have access to Mass. General Hospital.
Bench Coach Torey Lovullo will step up in his place and he'll start chemotherapy Monday.
The Red Sox also took to Twitter to share support from players, including Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz, who plan to support Farrell.
Even the Yankees weighed in!
This is not the first time the Farrell family has had to deal with cancer. Farrell's son Luke reportedly battled cancer twice.
