WRENTHAM, Mass. — Wrentham police are encouraging parents to educate their kids about hypodermic needles after a used syringe was found near a little league baseball field and a playground.

A man walking his dog found the needle along the woods bordering the field at the Sweatt Sports Complex on Randall Road Thursday morning. He picked it up and brought it to police.

"If we're having hypodermic needles show up in those areas, then we need to educate as young as we can, at least what it looks like and to stay away from it," said Deputy Police Chief Bill McGrath.

McGrath said the police department began discussing training Recreation and Public Works Department workers on how to handle the needles and dispose of them.

"These needles are being found at beaches, at parks, conservation areas, and they're being found on the street and in neighborhoods," McGrath said. "There's no neighborhood that's immune from it."

Police warn the public not to handle the needles and encourage anyone to call 911 immediately after finding them.
