BOSTON — The Boston Breakers announced Sunday that the professional team will no longer continue.
The National Women's Soccer League team in Allston was in discussions with an active buyer, said the Managing Partner Michael Stoller since November, but they could not reach a deal.
"Unfortunately, due to certain factors that process was halted on short notice. Since that point a number of potential buyers were spoken with, but nothing could be completed within the short timeline," said Stoller.
Head Coach Matthew Beard said the last few months have been "tough" and they were excited for the upcoming season.
As for the players, there will be a dispersal draft among the remaining NWSL teams. Earlier this month the team drafted four new players.
On Twitter, players expressed sadness, and thanked the fans for their support.
The team was originally founded as a charter member of the Women's United Soccer Association in 2000. WUSA folded in 2003. Since then, the team has belonged to several different leagues. The Boston Breakers began playing in the NWSL in April 2013.
Season ticket holders will be contacted and given full refunds, said the NWSL. Boston Breakers Academy will continue and is not affected by the folding of the professional team.
