PLYMOUTH, Mass. — A Holbrook woman did this weekend what doctors one year ago though would be impossible.

Patty Furey was born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas and other organs.

When she was a toddler, her parents were told she probably wouldn't live past 13, but she defied all odds.

Almost exactly a year ago, doctors told her family there was nothing more they could do and she'd probably pass away in the next 24 to 48 hours. Furey was even given her last rites.

Shortly after, on Nov. 6, she received a double lung transplant.

"Everytime I run I'm like why am i running this hurts this is uncomfortable I don't like it  but then a beautiful voice within my mind overtakes that and says you've worked so hard you've been through so much you can achieve anything you want," Furey said.

On Saturday, she ran and finished the Plymouth Pumpkin Run 5K.

"I couldn't have done it without my donor, they were with me the whole time," Furey said. "I was thinking of their family the whole time and I was thinking about where my donor was this time a year ago had they passed yet I used all their wonderful energy to carry me through difficult parts."
