Woman says late husband's ashes were stolen in string of house breaks

WALPOLE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A local woman says her late husband's ashes were taken when her house was broken into Wednesday.

Police are investigating after several homes in Walpole were broken into, but one woman has lost something that can't be replaced. She says her late husband's ashes were her last memory of him and the story gets even more heartbreaking.

"My dogs were on the front steps, which they are never outside the house," she said.

The homeowner, who we are not identifying by name, first found the damage, then noticed what was missing.

"They had ransacked the medicine cabinet and linen closets and did take some medication but they took every last bit of jewelry," she said.

But one piece is irreplaceable, because it was holding a memory of her late husband.

"There was a small heart shape locket, which was an urn with his ashes in it so that was taken as well," she said.

Walpole detectives say several homes were hit this week, all in one area around Bird Park in the east side of town. Detectives are working with pawn shops as they try to locate items like the locket urn.

In addition to the urn of ashes, her and her late husband's old wedding rings were also stolen. They were items she planned to pass on to her daughter.

Police are working with area pawn shops and are also dealing with a rash of car break ins. More than 20, and two of the cars were stolen.
