CANTON, Mass. — Police say a woman who was shot in the leg Monday night in Canton was a bystander who was hit by a stray bullet while walking to her car, officials said.

Canton Police confirmed that a woman was shot in the area of York Street and Ledgewood Drive and was rushed to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Canton Police Chief Kenneth Berkowitz said in a news conference Tuesday that police got a call around 10 p.m. about reports of shots fired and then an additional call that a woman had been struck by a bullet.

Berkowitz said preliminarily, it appears that two cars may have been involved in the shooting, and after an altercation and exchange of gunfire, the 20-year-old woman was hit in her calf by a stray bullet. Shots also hit a garage door and several cars on York Street.

"We surmise that two cars were probably involved and one car was shooting at another and the poor woman was an innocent victim, that’s what it looks like right now," said Berkowitz.

The area of the shooting is a residential neighborhood off Route 24 that borders conservation land. A portion of York Street was shut down until just after 2 a.m.

Berkowitz said no suspects have been identified yet but police have been talking to witnesses and continuing to gather evidence. No vehicle description has been released.

The investigation is ongoing.
