Woman gives birth in a minivan at Seekonk truck weighing station

SEEKONK, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com / AP) - Massachusetts State Police say a woman gave birth to a baby girl in a minivan at a truck weighing station in southeast Massachusetts.

Fire officials say the woman and her husband were going to the hospital Monday morning, but were forced to pull off the Interstate 195. She gave birth in the front seat before emergency responders arrived.

"It pretty much delivered itself. The baby was sitting right on her chest, good health, eyes open, good grasp. Just squeaking and squawking and sucking on its thumb," Seekonk Senior Medic Stephen Sarcione said.

The mother and her eight-pound baby girl were both healthy and police say they were taken to Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.

A Seekonk fire official says the unidentified woman is a nurse from the Boston area. She was visiting relatives in Westport and wasn't expecting to go into labor.
